Sinus Studies

The ability to treat paranasal sinus disease has been revolutionized by computed tomographic (CT) scanning. At Drs. Girgis and Associates, having the ability to examine CT images of the sinuses at the point of service enhances treatment options and improves patient outcomes. Often times sinus surgery can be avoided when comprehensive medical management for the treatment of a chronic sinus infection is initiated at the point service based on CT results. CT also defines the extent of the disease in any individual sinus, as well as any underlying anatomic abnormalities that may predispose a patient to chronic sinusitis. The ability to conduct a follow-up CT study of the paranasal sinuses also helps assure whether the sinus infection has improved with medical management. Should sinus surgery be an option for the treatment of chronic sinusitis that is unresponsive to medical management, CT scanning will identify the anatomic relationships of the key structures to the diseased areas, a process that is vital for surgical planning. A CT scan before endoscopic sinus surgery is mandatory and the standard of care to identify the patient’s sinus anatomy and its relationship to surrounding anatomic structures.

Image-Guided Sinus Surgery Preparation

At Drs. Girgis and Associates, images from our Siemens SOMATOM® Spirit scanner combined with GE InstaTrak image guided surgery technology provide our physicians with world class technology that enhances the ability to perform more thorough and challenging sinus and advanced ear, nose and throat surgical procedures. InstaTrak technology involves obtaining reformatted CT images of the paranasal sinuses whereby specific anatomic landmarks are captured on CT images. The reformatted CT images are stored on a CD-ROM that the physician can access in the operating room. InstaTrak technology enables the physician to reference CT images while surgically navigating the paranasal sinuses enhancing visualization and ensuring accurate access into the paranasal sinuses and other surrounding anatomic structures that may otherwise be obstructed by distorted anatomy, scar tissue and/or massive nasal/sinus polyps.

Dental Studies with SimPlant® for implant surgery

Drs. Girgis and Associates are pleased to offer CT dental imaging services with SimPlant® technology. Technological advancements in implant surgery have made it possible for dental specialists to use an “implant system” that can better achieve the reconstructive needs of the patient. SimPlant® is a computer guided implantology software that encompasses the use of three dimensional image slicing in Dentistry. The use of computed tomography (CT) allows a very detailed assessment of the jaw in three dimensions. These 3-D visualizations obtained from our Siemens SOMATOM® Spirit scanner combined with the appropriate SimPlant® software provide reformatted images that allow dental specialists to place implants with a level of precision that was unattainable until recently.

Dental specialists interested in obtaining SimPlant® CT reformatted images for implant surgery may contact our office to obtain additional information regarding patient referrals. There may be insurance coverage restrictions for this type of CT scan depending on the patient’s insurance policy and the patient’s diagnosis. A written and signed physician order is required to conduct a CT SimPlant® scan.

Referrals for other CT studies

Drs. Girgis and Associates can function as a facility for CT imaging service referrals by physicians outside our practice. We are currently seeking Independent Testing Facility (IDTF) designation from Medicare as well as facility participation for CT imaging by several other major insurance companies. A list of CT imaging services that we can provide on our Siemens SOMATOM® Spirit scanner to patients referred by physicians outside our practice is indicated below. Once the CT images are read by the radiologist, a copy of the CT report will be provided to the referring physician. A written and signed physician order is required to conduct a CT scan.
