What is a CPAP

CONTINUOUS POSITIVE AIRWAY PRESSURE (CPAP) TREATMENT

This is one method that is used to alleviate snoring or Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Nasal CPAP delivers air into your airway through a specially designed nasal mask.  The flow of air creates enough pressure when you inhale to keep your airway open.  CPAP is considered the most effective nonsurgical treatment for the alleviation of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  It is safe and effective in sleep apnea patients of all ages, including children.

Should you consider CPAP?

We would evaluate you and ask the following questions:

  • Do you snore loudly and disturb your family and friends?
  • Do you have daytime sleepiness?
  • Do you wake up frequently in the middle of the night?
  • Do you have frequent episodes of obstructed breathing during sleep?
  • Do you have morning headaches or tiredness?

Before receiving the nasal mask, you would need the proper CPAP pressure set during a “sleep study.”

How CPAP Works

  • The machine weighs about 5 lbs and fits on a bedside table
  • A mask fits over the nose.  A tube connects the mask to the CPAP device.
  • The machine delivers a steady stream of air under slight pressure through the tube into the mask.
There are 3 different types of CPAP masks depending on the diagnosis:

Nasal Pillow                             Nasal mask                       Full face mask
