Nasal and Sinus

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the membrane lining of any sinus, especially one of the para nasal sinuses.  Acute sinusitis is a short-term condition that responds well to antibiotics and decongestants; chronic sinusitis is a recurring sinus infection.  Either medication or surgery is a possible treatment.

Symptoms:

  • facial pain/pressure
  • nasal obstruction/blockage
  • facial congestion/fullness
  • discolored nasal discharge
  • post-nasal drainage
  • diminished sense of smell
  • sometimes fever
  • Headache, bad breath, and fatigue

Our approach to the treatment of chronic and acute sinusitis is comprehensive.  We offer full evaluation including endoscopic and imaging studies, allergy testing, and medical, as well as surgical treatment of persistent sinusitis.  Surgery is performed after the results of a CT scan are thoroughly evaluated and when the infections are recurrent and/or non-responsive to the medication.

Deviated Septum

The nasal septum is the wall dividing the nasal cavity into halves.  A “deviated septum” occurs when the septum is severely shifted away the midline.

Symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Blockage of one or both nostrils
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • At times, facial pain, headaches, post nasal drip

Septoplasty is the preferred surgical treatment to correct a deviated septum.

Allergic Rhinitis (Seasonal, Perennial)

Allergic Rhinitis is chronic nasal problems due to the body’s immune system’s over-response to a specific allergen.  When this occurs in the nose, sneezing and congestion occurs.  Seasonal rhinitis is hypersensitivity during certain times of the year (see Allergies).  Perennial rhinitis occurs year-round (see Allergies).
