The thyroid gland is a bow-tie shaped gland in the neck which produces thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormone regulates the Basal Metabolic Rate, which is the rate at which chemical reactions take place in the body.
Growths that develop in the thyroid gland usually do not affect the thyroid hormone levels in the body. These growths are a concern because 10-20% of the time they can be cancer. Our physicians are trained to evaluate tumors of the head and neck-area including the thyroid gland. In cases where thyroid hormone levels are too high we often work closely with endocrinologists in the community.
We use up-to-date nerve monitoring techniques in the operating room to minimize risk to sensitive nerves in the neck if thyroid gland removal is required.
