Parotid Gland The parotid is a large irregularly shaped gland inside the cheek which produces saliva to digest the food. Growths in this gland are malignant 15-20% of the time. Sometimes these can be fluid filled cysts rather than solid tumors. It is also possible to get stones in the parotid gland, like kidney stones, which can cause pain and swelling when eating.
A thorough evaluation is required. In those cases where surgery is required we use up-to-date nerve monitoring techniques in the operating room to minimize risk to sensitive nerves which go through the gland and control movement of the face.
Submandibular Gland The submandibular gland is located under the chin, one on either side, near the jaw bone and also produces saliva to digest the food. Stones and cysts often occur in this gland, but solid tumors and cancers are possible. Any swelling or growth, whether tender or non-tender should be evaluated.
